Scientific and technological development ability has become a major factor in improving a nation's economic competitiveness. The National Science Council (NSC) in Taipei, Taiwan is the largest sci-tech funding organisation in the Republic of China. Its duties include formulating policies, drafting mid- and long-term plans, co-ordinating and facilitating projects and assessing the results of implementation. NSC also provides support to academic research projects with funding through the Science and Technology Development Fund. Chapter 1 of this review provides a general overview of the role and function of NSC. Chapter 2 presents the results of the implementation of sci-tech administration and looks at the Science and Technology Development Fund, the promotion of comprehensive sci-tech development, funding academic research and developing science-based industrial parks. Chapter 3 examines NSC promotion of academic research in a wide range of areas including research in mathematics and natural science, engineering and applied science, bioscience, agriculture, medicine and public health, humanities and social sciences, science education and research on development and the environment.
